Kanhaiya Lal’s killing & arrest of Alt News co-founder Zubair https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-2Y80O-1ghc 2 jul2022
This week, the news of Hindu tailor #KanhaiyaLal’s beheading in #Udaipur by two extremist Muslim men, Gaus Mohammad and Mohammad Riyaz Akhtari, hit headlines. One would think there was nothing to “debate” about such a crime, but when does news TV disappoint?
Times Now, where the entire #NupurSharma fracas started, invited a non-expert who masquerades as a CPI spokesperson and political analyst. He justified the murder by questioning the victim. We explain how such “experts” and “fake spokespersons” help TV news anchors create a perception that some people in the opposition support the murder. Meanwhile, Rahul Shivshankar wondered if people like Gauri Lankesh, Narendra Achyut Dabholkar and Govind Pansare should be beheaded for insulting Hindu gods and if India should legalise beheadings. We explain why it would be hard to behead people who are long dead, and why Times Now remains the classiest of all channels.
Arnab Goswami cheered the arrest of #MohammadZubair of Alt News. We look at why many of India’s prominent news anchors love to hate Zubair.

India’s Adani’s group, its proximity to prime minister Narendra Modi, and its influence over the Sri Lanka government has been at the centre of a political controversy unfolding in Sri Lanka over the last five days. We (newslaundry) tracked India’s top business papers over 5 days. Modi-Adani controversy barely figured Why wouldn’t a business media house report on a controversy involving Modi and the Adani group?
https://www.newslaundry.com/2022/06/14/2022/03/31/why-indian-medias-coverage-of-sri-lanka-crisis-is-partial by Kartik Kakar Senior Sri Lankan journalist Nalaka Gunawardene, who lives in Colombo, points out that “global wire services have been generating impressionistic coverage from Sri Lanka in recent weeks”. An example is the often used short-cut, blaming the “Chinese debt-trap” for the country’s current problems. He points out that this is “simply not supported by data: international sovereign bonds issued since 2007 make up over a third of Sri Lanka’s foreign debt, and borrowings from multilateral agencies are larger than from any bilateral source”. Reducing the explanation to either blaming one country, or the pandemic, paints a very partial picture.
Additionally, Gunawardene says, “I so wish the Indian journalists and broadcasters who visit Sri Lanka for short periods of time on crisis coverage would expand their circle of sources beyond the usual suspects in official and cocktail circuits. We are tired of seeing the same few (well-connected) academics and activists giving the same or similar soundbites for years. Sri Lanka now has a new breed of smart and articulate younger economists, political scientists, international relations analysts and others, who offer refreshing new analyses of entrenched problems. Why not seek out and capture their views, too?”
Prime Time: Are Media Houses Suppressing News About Controversial Remarks By BJP Leaders?
6 Jun 2022 Prime Time With Ravish Kumar - June 6, 2022: Ravish Kumar takes a look at the reporting by leading newspapers about the controversial remarks by two BJP leaders about Prophet Mohammad. Several Indian ambassadors in the Gulf region were summoned in a single day by the foreign ministries in their host countries while others issued strong statements condemning the remarks. As Qatar and Kuwait summoned the envoys in Doha and Kuwait City respectively, the Taliban regime in Afghanistan condemned the comments by BJP's Nupur Sharma and Naveen Kumar Jindal. Saudi Arabia and Bahrain too have reacted to the comments.
Why allow them to be called Fringe!
Wasnt there calls within India for control of hate speec, extreme speehes or calls to Govt to control such elements...
Apr 23 2022 note from I & B Ministry asking for caution..
Asli fringe kaun? Look who’s keeping Nupur Sharma company in BJP’s ‘fringe’ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o6wcAVcdhjg Jun 7, 2022
After now-former BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma’s controversial comments against Prophet Muhammad drew backlash from several countries, India’s governing party suspended her, while the foreign ministry dismissed her views as “fringe”. If her Muslim-baiting remarks make Nupur “fringe”, how should we describe these BJP leaders who have publicly expressed similar views? As a, ahem, Times Now panellist once told a BJP spokesperson, “Every party has a fringe, your party is the fringe.”
Gyanvapi Ka Sach, from Param Bhakts on TV news | TV Newsance 21 May 2022 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BwDDIWYI6mg
Is it a #Shivling or a Fountain? The entire week on TV news was spent debating this question pertaining to the #GyanvapiMosque. Anchors turned Kar Sevaks and gave us minute details over a leaked report on the survey conducted at the mosque. We had experts like Amish Tripathi on #NDTV, and history professor on R Bharat, who had once spoken of killing #Gandhi. #NavikaKumar on #TimesNow spoke of how historical wounds should heal. Except all her show did the exact opposite. In all of this, headlines on pollution deaths, price rise, paper leak scam, floods were ignored. It’s truly open season — #TajMahal, #JamaMasjid, every other mosque or world heritage site is up for debate. But why should anchors stop there? The world should be their oyster, so we have some suggestions of our own for #AkhandBharat.

“You have divided the earth, what now of the moon and stars?
You have named the rivers, what of the flowing currents?
Shiva’s Ganga is water, so is the Aab-e-Zamzam.
The mullah drinks, so does the pandit:
what is the religion of water?
Ask these sectarians, will you make a separate sun?
We all breathe the same air, will you make new air?
Those who divide generations, are misguiding the nation.
Tell me: did Allah destroy the mandirs and were masjids destroyed by Ram?”

Lawbreakers, not quite citizens: ‘Bulldozer’ reportage shows how little India cares for urban poor . https://www.newslaundry.com/2022/04/28/lawbreakers-not-quite-citizens-bulldozer-reportage-shows-how-little-india-cares-for-urban-poor Their ‘illegal’ settlements are often treated as eyesores standing in the way of ‘beautifying’ a city. ByKalpana Sharma28 Apr, 2022
Instead of showing an iota of sensitivity, a section of TV journalists shouted, climbed onto bulldozers, and remained in perpetual exclamation mode as they recorded the mayhem. To get a glimpse of this, take time to watch this edition of TV Newsance by Newslaundry. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=roMsxpdw4xE Our (Reporters') job is not to kick people who are already crushed by poverty and unemployment; it is to hold to account the people with power. On April 20, we did just the opposite.
These settlements of the urban poor have a history, linked to migration but also to demolition. Jahangirpuri, for instance, was designated to resettle people pushed out from the heart of Delhi in efforts by the Indira Gandhi government to “beautify” the national capital. That term has increasingly come to mean that you either hide the poor, or send them far away so that urban poverty is invisiblised.
The people who were settled in Jahangirpuri in the 1970s were given small plots on which they were expected to construct their shelters. These people had originally come to Delhi from UP, Bihar, Rajasthan and West Bengal. Over time, as with most other similar settlements, tin and tarpaulin were replaced with brick and mortar, and pucca houses coexisted with temporary structures – all under the benign eye of the authorities.
Yet, this history of the place, and understanding of what it was and how and why it is what it is today, was largely missing from the reporting on Jahangirpuri.
