(way to go?) In 1880, the Portuguese exempted Goa’s Hindu inhabitants by enacting for them a special law protecting their customs and usages (Codigo de Usos e costumes dos Hindus Gentios de Goa). In 1854, the Portuguese enacted a law protecting the usages and customs of non-Christian inhabitants of Daman and in 1894 enacted a similar law protecting the usages and customs of non-Christian inhabitants of Diu.

Flavia Agnes, an eminent scholar of family laws and women’s rights lawyer, has questioned the timing and intention of raking up the Uniform Civil Code in the context of the general elections in 2024. Interestingly, the Modi government has done nothing on the suggestions of the 21st Law Commission Report that called for ending gender discrimination and removing unequal property rights.
