Google translate: Whatever was being said regarding e-commerce, now Minister Piyush Goyal has also started saying the same. It's only after ten years that they have understood that as the network of e-commerce spreads, the shops on the streets close down. To stop this, many countries have made strict rules that you will have to buy some things from street shops only. The big thing is that Goyal rejected the very report claiming that e-commerce will increase employment.
Were eight crore new jobs created in three years? https://www.thehindu.com/business/Economy/were-8-crore-new-jobs-created-in-three-years/article68551862.ece August 22, 2024 Prime Minister Modi, based on the India-KLEMS database, claimed that India created “eight crore new jobs in the last three to four years”. However, analysts are questioning the methodology used to estimate these numbers. They argue that little meaningful employment was created in these years .
The SBI report, however, estimates the total number of workers from ASUSE (The ASUSE covers only unincorporated non-agricultural establishments in manufacturing, trade and other services.) as 56.8 crore, and claims comparability with the figures in India-KLEMS. ( KLEMS stands for Capital (K), Labour (L), Energy (E), Material (M) and Services (S).)
Clearly, the SBI report assumed a certain number of workers employed in sectors not covered in ASUSE — such as agriculture, construction, registered factories, corporate sector, government and cooperatives — using other household surveys that employ different concepts and methodologies. It then added those numbers to the number of workers in ASUSE to arrive at the inflated estimate of 56.8 crore workers. But there is no scientific basis for such an indirect method, that too to make an inane and motivated validation.
To sum up, data from India-KLEMS, which was designed for very different purposes and uses questionable methods, are being used to drive a specific political narrative on employment generation. But the real culprit in this episode is the Government of India, which has refused to organise the new decadal Census till date
Sagarika Ghose on X : HORRIFYING. A 21 old woman kills herself in UP’s Ambedkarnagar after the UP police allegedly refused to register a case of gang rape. Crimes against women are now a full scale national crisis. All of us must speak in ONE VOICE in empathy and solidarity in every case irrespective of where the crime happens. No politics, no whataboutery, let’s make this a NATIONAL MISSION on women’s safety.
Beyond the outrage: Media coverage of Kolkata rape-murder case has many blind spots https://www.newslaundry.com/2024/08/22/beyond-the-outrage-media-coverage-of-kolkata-rape-murder-case-has-many-blind-spots Kalpana Sharma 22 Aug, 2024 Proximity and relevance to a media market continue to determine what sexual crimes get detailed coverage.
the task of sifting fact from fiction becomes even more difficult for journalists reporting on this case. The obfuscation by the hospital authorities has added additional hurdles in obtaining verified information. And the conflicting narratives put out by the warring political groups have only added to the confusion.
The real tragedy of the shifting focus of media reporting, which is now on the hospital authorities and their inaction, is that the central issue of the safety of women professionals at the workplace has become almost incidental. The protestors have not forgotten and continue to highlight it. But the media’s gaze has shifted.
'Bail is rule, Jail exception'– Why SC verdicts in UAPA/PMLA cases underlining this, are significant https://youtu.be/METGaWVhohc?t=69 . In separate orders the top court reminded High Courts and trial courts that they “must not play safe” when it comes to grant of bail. What is the implication of these rulings and is the Supreme Court on a course correction considering it has in the past raised the bar higher for grant of bail in these cases? Right of Prosecution vs rights of individual. These special laws have altered this balance.

the new memorandum of agreement stated that since the University Grants Commission provided more than 50% of the funds to the institution, it would now appoint a vice chancellor, and pro vice chancellor, a key post under the vice chancellor. These posts had not existed before. The new agreement did away with the post of the director, and reduced the number of board seats the Tata Trusts had to one...
The Tatas had given faculty considerable autonomy, teachers said. Faculty also said they could challenge opinions and decisions of the Tatas without fearing repercussions. As the Union government has sought to displace them, this freedom and transparency has been jeopardised, they noted...
of late they have been kept in the dark about many administrative decisions. For instance, the facilitation committee, which, according to the institution’s website, “ensures alignment in decision-making, management and coordination amongst schools, centres, administrative units, and the general administration” has become “defunct”..
TISS, and other social science institutions, have also been negatively affected by the Central government’s National Institutional Ranking Framework, launched in 2015....

WA: death penalty? Death penalty is being asked for in so many cities and states
WA: AA:
In 2012 they didn't just rape her, they played with her intestine. This was in Delhi and they named her Nirbhaya.
In 2017 they didn't just rape her, they hung her on a tree. This was in Unnao and they named her Nirbhaya 2.
In 2019 they didn't just rape her, they burnt her alive. This was in Hyderabad and they named her Nirbhaya 3.
From ages to 2019, all we are doing is burning candles, blackening our DP, commenting on few fb pages and forget it within a week. Days pass by and we have Nirbhaya 4, 5, 6.
In 2024…..They brutally Raped & killed a Resident doctor ….
It's time to burn the culprits and not the candles. It's high time for the govt to pass a bill for capital punishment for rapists. When currency can be changed overnight, when special session can be called to increase the salary of politicians, when Parliament can remain open all night for trust votes, wondering what is delaying to pass a stringent law against rape.
WA: On Capital Punishment
Any legally administered punishment has three purposes: Restrain, Reform and Retribution.
Capital punishment cannot, for very obvious reasons, reform.
It has been reportedly found that certainty of punishment is far more effective than severity. No evidence that capital punishment restrains more than other harsh penal measures.
So, only the third purpose i.e. retribution is served. Those affected feel that justice has been done. Hence, there's also the notion of proportionality.
This primordial urge, deep embedded in human psyche, has got to be muted and not inflamed, if crime rates are to be brought down.
WA: JD It has been proved that capital punishment has not been a deterrent. Also, when there is capital punishment the bar for proof is much higher. And since in rape cases, we have only the testimony of the victim, these days the brutality goes to more bizarre extents, even death. Social ostracization and rigorous imprisonment is a better deterrent. Confiscation of all assets and handing them over to the victim could work...
Delhi has a new think-tank for Narendra Modi Studies. https://theprint.in/feature/around-town/dehi-has-a-new-think-tank-for-narendra-modi-studies-ex-amu-faculty-former-critic-is-head/1595700/ Debdutta Chakraborty 26 May, 2023.. Ex-AMU faculty, Jasim Mohammad, a bitter critic of Modi earlier, is head .He wants to establish a centre in every district of India.
the Centre for Narendra Modi Studies. Housed in a massive three-storeyed building, the centre is months away from completion. The goal is to study PM Modi’s leadership, governance style, and international diplomacy.
<<"When I met him, I realised that he is above everything — religion or politics. What struck me most was that he was always talking about keeping every community together and building a harmonious nation. Here's a pretty recent graphic demonstration of the mighty endeavour to keep every community together and build a harmonious nation by this Narendra "Laode Ne Bhojyam" Modi -- the solitary one on this planet having an academic degree in Entire Political Science and who also specialise claims to have been sent by the Supreme Being bypassing the biological route in order to get His will executed: <https://youtu.be/uBx9bzDmjbo>

Raghuram Rajan on U.S. Recession Fears, Market Volatility, and Impact on India https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=foaRCEr3OPM the recent volatility in global markets. August began with a significant downturn as the U.S. seemed dangerously close to a recession, and the Fed was expected to make six rate cuts over two years. However, just weeks later, stock indexes are nearing all-time highs, the economy appears strong, and the Fed is now expected to cut rates much more slowly. Amid all this uncertainty, what's the real state of the U.S. and global economy, and how does it affect India?
jobless growth is bad but jobs without growth is also not sustainable.
this year's guidance from The Reserve Bank is 7.2
but I would look at the quality of that growth and that is why the jobs issue becomes really important. we've had very Capital intensive growth in in our manufacturing sector ..and the labor intensive segments are not..
the China plus one flows why is it that they're not creating many more textile jobs many more leather jobs.
I would focus much more on growth quality . I would focus on creating the foundations for strong sustainable growth in the future which means much more investment in education skill building health care so that our human capital is ready for anything.
