Emergency & Neo Emergency: MG Devasahayam https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z4Mun47hdxg Sam Pitroda the history of human rights violations during the last ten years mirrors the Emergency in every way. Both the Emergency and the undeclared emergency have seen a war on dissenting writers, journalists, students, and politicians.
The book throws up searching questions like is the Emergency really done and dusted, who and what was primarily responsible for its imposition, how was it defeated, who did it, and how India is going through an era of neo-Emergency. The author highlights how India’s democracy has swung between two extremes—from two years of the ‘darkest period’ to ten years of the ‘dark-dark period’.
As masters and minions of both eras claim themselves as ‘defenders of democracy’, the question is, are they?

India’s net forest cover sees paltry rise of 156.41 sq km; decrease in mangroves and Western Ghats cover https://indianexpress.com/article/india/india-forest-tree-cover-govt-report-9737617/
WA : Kal What is the basis of such a claim?? The big highways, expansion of cities, many industrial projects, river linking have taken big toll on the forest.
AP: In my humble opinion, the figures are and have always been bogus. This is based on the facts that the forest figures are based on the India State of Forests Report prepared based on Forest Survey of India maps made from satellite imagery. Strangely, the FSI website itself has a disclaimer stating that their maps are not accurate!
Now, the forests recognized by Government for protection under
the law are not based on the FSI maps. For example, Goa Govt recognizes and protects only 1200 sq kms (33%) of its land as forests, while FSI shows over 2200 (60%) sq kms of forests in Goa.
Indian Govt has different figures for the world and for itself.

Mumbai: MPCB Directs BMC To Implement Dust Mitigation Plan At Shivaji Park Within 15 Days https://www.freepressjournal.in/mumbai/mumbai-mpcb-directs-bmc-to-implement-dust-mitigation-plan-at-shivaji-park-within-15-days
The residents of Dadar’s Shivaji Park area have been complaining about the dust pollution for a couple of years. However, the issue came to limelight amid the worsening air quality index in Mumbai since last month.
In the historic 28-acre big Shivaji Park, 70 percent area is plain ground and 30 percent is the green patch. “It was four to five years ago that the BMC had put red soil on the ground as part of its beautification project. However, the ground has a high footfall and it was a failed project,” a civic officer said.
Mahayuti’s vote-winning cash scheme for poor women shrinks under financial strain https://frontline.thehindu.com/news/mahayuti-maharashtra-election-ajit-pawar-devendra-fadnavis-ladki-bahin-beneficiaries/article69104501.ece Jan 16, 2025 the government has taken a route that was anticipated before election: it has decided to cut down the list of the beneficiaries of the Ladki Bahin scheme, a direct beneficiary transfer (DBT) scheme that brought Mahayuti back to power from the debacle of Lok Sabha. Out of 2.5 crore beneficiaries, the list could be pruned by up to 15 per cent, according to informed sources. Almost 30 to 35 lakh women would be deleted from the scheme.
How cash transfers and communal politics propelled Mahayuti’s landslide win in Maharashtra https://frontline.thehindu.com/politics/maharashtra-assembly-elections-2024-mahayuti-alliance-historic-victory-bjp-shinde/article68901722.ece Ladki Bahin scheme’s reach to 2.3 crore women, combined with an aggressive “Ek Hai Toh Safe Hai” campaign, helped the NDA win over 200 seats.
How BJP became the dominant political force in Maharashtra, replacing Congress https://frontline.thehindu.com/politics/maharashtra-assembly-election-bjp-mahayuti-victory-congress-hindutva-maratha-reservation-bahujan-samaj-ma-dha-va/article68963808.ece
This dominance comes through a combination of Hindutva ideology, welfare schemes, and strategic alliance-building with regional leaders.

The vaguely worded press release states that a high-powered enquiry committee has submitted its report – nearly 14 months after it was set up by the Indian government – on activities of some organised criminal groups and terrorist organisations, which undermined the security interests of both India and the United States. The Narendra Modi government was forced to order the probe in November 2023 under pressure from the Biden administration when the US Department of Justice went public regarding the attempt by Indian officials, with the help of criminals, to kill pro-Khalistan campaigner Gurpatwant Singh Pannun in New York. Similar charges have also been levelled by Canada where Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said in September 2023 that Canada had credible evidence that agents of the Indian government were involved in the murder of pro-Khalistan activist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in British Columbia in June 2023
https://www.business-standard.com/economy/news/india-russia-term-deal-talks-for-crude-oil-on-hold-amid-us-restrictions-125011400998_1.html last week’s sanctions on Russian oil and gas entities by the United States have put the talks on hold. Official sources have said the government is preoccupied with analysing the sanctions, which may cut off India’s access to discounted Russian crude and force it to buy at market prices. “Any deal in the current geopolitical climate requires careful planning and lengthy discussions so that shipments do not suddenly stop due to sanctions. But the escalating sanctions have complicated the matter,” an official source said.
