Explained: What’s ANI vs Wikipedia legal battle all about? The News Minute https://youtu.be/t9y2vm9QLGk Sep 24, 2024
ANI has lodged a lawsuit of Rs 2 crore against US-based non-profit Wikimedia Foundation, which runs Wikipedia, for “allowing misleading, negative, and defamatory” edits on their Wikipedia page.
The second paragraph of Wikipedia’s page on ANI says that it has been “accused of having served as a propaganda tool for the incumbent central government, distributing materials from a vast network of fake news websites, and misreporting events on multiple occasions”. The news agency, meanwhile, has alleged that the edit has been done with the “malicious intent of tarnishing” its reputation.
In a hearing of the case early this month, Justice Navin Chawla of the Delhi High Court asked the foundation to disclose information about the editors who made the edit and also remarked that if Wikipedia doesn’t like India, they should not work here.
But does Wikipedia have control over who writes and edits on its pages? Can absolutely anyone write anything? How does it work? Why did Justice Chawla make such a strong statement? Is it likely that Wikipedia will be banned in India? What is happening in the case?

The critique of neoliberalism is only one part of Joseph E. Stiglitz’s new book 'The Road to Freedom: Economics and the Good Society'. The greater part of it is on freedom and how to further it. https://thewire.in/books/can-economics-pave-the-path-to-a-good-society
The core of the author’s argument is best conveyed in his own words: “I be(gan) the book with a straightforward observation: One person’s freedom is another’s unfreedom. Externalities are pervasive, and the management of these externalities – including environmental devastation – that are inevitably the by-products of unfettered markets requires public action(s), including regulations. Indeed, any game needs rules and regulations. I’ve delineated (here) the need for regulations to curb the agglomeration of power and the exploitation of some by others.”

The Left Can’t Cede Patriotism to the Right https://jacobin.com/2024/09/patriotism-left-wing-nationalist-politics Wars, geopolitical tensions, crimes against humanity, and totalitarian regimes as well as anti-colonial uprisings, minority rights, and societies unified toward goals of freedom and emancipation — nationalism is almost always present behind the key issues of modernity.

the Left cannot simply ignore the existence of national identities. These identities are integral elements of the political and social landscape in which the Left operates and, for the foreseeable future, they do not appear to be diminishing in importance. Thus, calls for the Left to reject national identity are a dead end and risk distancing it from its own popular traditions.
Gramsci - nazionale-popolare - related it to cultural productions: literary or artistic works that express the distinctive characteristics of national culture and are recognized as representative by the popular classes. Today we use the term “national-popular” in a more general sense to refer to all those cultural, aesthetic, behavioral, and habitual traits widespread among the common people of a particular country.

Bablu Ganguly and Mary Vattamattam - visionary founders of the Timbaktu Collective, a transformative community organization located in the drought-prone region of Anantapur (Andhra Pradesh) Founded in 1990, the collective focuses on sustainable rural development, emphasizing organic farming, ecological restoration, and empowering marginalized communities, especially women and children.
Initially, Timbaktu began with afforestation projects, reclaiming acres of barren land through agroforestry and organic farming practices. Under their leadership, the collective has expanded its initiatives to include microfinance, women's cooperatives, and promoting alternative education. One of its flagship programs is the Kalpavalli Tree Growers Cooperative, which fosters eco-friendly livelihoods and helps regenerate forests, providing food and income for local communities.
The collective also runs Dharani FaM Coop, a farmer-owned organic cooperative that supports over 1,800 farmers in transitioning to chemical-free agriculture, while ensuring fair pricing and sustainable income. Their efforts have been lauded for addressing both environmental and social justice challenges, offering a successful model of community-driven development that balances ecology with economy.
