NYT Probe Unearths Links Between Chinese Propaganda in India & Abroad To US Tech Mogul Neville Roy Singham
Moneylife Digital Team 07 August 2023 https://www.moneylife.in/article/nyt-probe-unearths-links-between-chinese-propaganda-in-india-and-abroad-to-us-tech-mogul-neville-roy-singham/71600.html The authorities in India raided a news organisation tied to Mr Singham during a crackdown on the press, accusing it of having ties to the Chinese government but offering no proof.....From a think tank in Massachusetts to an event space in Manhattan, from a political party in South Africa to news organisations in India and Brazil, NYT tracked hundreds of millions of dollars to groups linked to Mr Singham that mix progressive advocacy with Chinese government talking points... Mr Singham told NYT that he does not work at the direction of the Chinese government. "But the line between him and the propaganda apparatus is so blurry that he shares office space — and his groups share staff members — with a company whose goal is to educate foreigners about the miracles that China has created on the world stage."..
These propaganda groups are funded through American nonprofits flush with at least US$275 million in donations. .."Mr Singham's groups have produced YouTube videos that, together, racked up millions of views. They also seek to influence real-world politics by meeting with congressional aides, training politicians in Africa, running candidates in South African elections and organising protests like the one in London that erupted into violence. The result is a seemingly organic bloom of far-left groups that echo Chinese government talking points, echo one another, and are echoed in turn by the Chinese state media," NYT says
"I categorically deny and repudiate any suggestion that I am a member of, work for, take orders from, or follow instructions of any political party or government or their representatives," he wrote in an email to NYT. "I am solely guided by my beliefs, which are my long-held personal views." The son of a leftist academic, Archibald Singham, Mr Singham is a longtime activist who founded the Chicago-based software consultancy Thoughtworks,
Anurag Thakur Slams Congress Over Report On China, Tech Mughal Link https://www.ndtv.com/india-news/anurag-thakur-slams-congress-over-report-on-china-tech-mughal-link-4274933 Union minister Anurag Thakur accused the Congress of defending US millionaire Neville Roy Singham and media portal NewsClick when they were investigated by law enforcement agencies in 2021. August 06, 2023 https://twitter.com/ianuragthakur/status/1688198949453119488 "It is natural for the Congress to defend Neville and NewsClick because national interest never matters to its leadership. Isn't it the same Congress Party that signed an MoU with the CPC in the year 2008 to promote Chinese interest in India and allegedly accepted donations for the Rajiv Gandhi Foundation (RGF) from the Chinese embassy?"

In 2008, they had invited both Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi. In 2016, they were talking to the Chinese during the Doklam crisis,” the MP said. ChatGPT : Simple questions, not-so-simple answers By Raag Delhi - 27/04/2023 https://www.raagdelhi.com/chatgpt-manoj-pandey/ ChatGPT is an advanced chatbot.
Notice how the computer has moved from blurting out ready-made answers to generating responses, because it has been trained to do so; and from being dumb to understanding the human language and responding in the same way (in a way, becoming autonomous). When the chatbot is that powerful, it is ChatGPT: a chatbot that is Generative Pre-Trained Transformer... Research on ‘understanding’ the human language is also in use for some years. For example, Google has evolved an advanced language model, called LaMDA, which is being used by it for producing relevant search results. Google has also released ‘Bard’, a language tool similar to ChatGPT.
Making use of the capabilities of GPT technology, many apps and programs are being developed for doing professional tasks (e.g. coding, video and image editing, market research) in a jiffy and often with little professional skills.
GPT and search engines work differently. In response to user queries, the search engine gives out actual resources on the web, in the form of links, small snippets, images, videos, etc. On the other hand, a GPT tool uses the information fed into it (mostly in the form of web resources) and generates its own responses based on its training and other factors.

Kerala: Congress, BJP Oppose Speaker’s Comments on Pseudo Science, CPI(M) Refutes Allegations of Hurting Religious Beliefs Neelambaran A | 05 Aug 2023
The speaker warned students in a school in Kannur recently to be aware of pseudoscience being insisted as facts. Responding to questions from the students, one of which was about the invention of aeroplanes, he said that it was Wright Brothers, but for believers of Hindutva, it is Pushpaka Vimana. Shamsheer also accused the Hindutva ideology of propagating myths in place of science.
Four days later, on July 25, a district-level BJP leader filed a case in Thiruvananthapuram against the speaker for insulting Hindu beliefs. The complainant alleged that the speaker violated the constitutional oath.
The Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) is among the outfits jumping in to condemn Shamsheer, along with their ideological enemies, the Sangh Parivar.
The past nine years since the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) assumed power in 2014 have witnessed staggering claims about the existence of genetics, stem cell technology, plastic surgery and aeroplanes in the ancient Vedic period
Dam Safety in HP: Himachal floods have spotlighted the problems with hydropower dams. https://www.newsclick.in/hp-malana-dam-gates-still-not-operational-govt-must-ensure-safety-hydropower-projects
Malana hydropower project in Kullu district is currently in the news for still being unable to open the dam gates, which have been blocked by the considerable muck and debris upstream. It has been over a week, but the gates are still not operational.
There are several hydropower projects in Himachal Pradesh being run by private players; Then there are micro-hydropower projects constructed by private players, also called Independent Power Producers(IPPs). All the IPP hydropower projects are run with a run-of-the-river dam technology, which means these are not large dams. However, malfunction of the dams or their gates being locked can create a cascading effect downstream.
Indians Must say no to Hate-Filled News https://www.newsclick.in/indians-must-say-no-hate-filled-news SN Sahu, the former Officer on Special Duty to ex-Indian President KR Narayanan . 05 Aug 2023, delves into the perilous intersection of media, hate, and violence.
Five days before India’s independence, on 10th August 1947, Mahatma Gandhi, speaking at a prayer meeting at Sodepur, warned, “If this wretched spirit of communalism had entered the police force, the prospect was bleak indeed”. Therefore, he said he “hoped that the police would realise the dignity of their profession”.
Seventy-six years after Gandhi’s dire predictions about the poisonous communal spirit within the police, the nation is witnessing the horrors of communalism guiding this armed force—be it RPF constable Chetan Singh or the police personnel in Manipur who are being accused of having handed over three Kuki women to a hostile crowd that sexually assaulted and paraded them.
Communal hatred's alarming consequences are being exposed in the violent incidents in Haryana and Manipur. The media's role, particularly 'godi' outlets known for their divisive content, is under scrutiny.
A Supreme Court bench of Justices KM Joseph and Hrishikesh Roy, while hearing a clutch of petitions on alleged hate speech via some TV shows, observed on 22 September 2022 that the visual media is the “chief medium of hate speech” and wondered why the government of India is treating it as “a trivial matter” and “standing by as a mute witness when all this is happening.”
The bench observed that hate speech in different forms “has the effect of ridiculing a community” and can have a “devastating effect.”
