“Crony Capitalism” As an Economic Strategy by Prabhat Patnaik https://peoplesdemocracy.in/2023/0212_pd/%E2%80%9Ccrony-capitalism%E2%80%9D-economic-strategy
Adani’s invoking nationalism was debunked by Hindenburg on the grounds that fraud does not disappear if the fraudster shrouds himself in a nationalist cloak; this would be true if the nation’s interest was somehow independently and objectively defined, but if the nation’s interest is simply taken to be identical with the interest of the Modi-Adani duo, then this accusation loses validity. Adani’s defence was based precisely on assuming this identity.
“Crony capitalism” under the Modi dispensation by contrast is elevated to the status of an economic strategy and is pursued confidently as being in the “national interest”... Not instituting an inquiry into the affairs of the Adani empire would be impossible, for it would be an act lacking any credibility in global financial circles; likewise an inquiry that finds the Adanis to be pure and lily-white will carry no credibility in global financial circles. Hence the Adanis will have to face some punitive action no matter how light.
..This entire episode has been a particular manifestation of the contradiction between the globalisation of capital and any notion of the nation-State, including what purports to be, though implicitly, a “Hindu” nation-State. The contradiction arises not because globalisation is a rectifying process that brooks no wrong-doing; it arises because under globalisation competition between capitals occurs at a level where no single nation-State can snuff it out.

SEBI seeks more time on Adani-Hindenburg report: https://indianexpress.com/article/explained/explained-economics/sebi-adani-hindenburg-report-case-timeline-8892362/ The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) has filed an application in the Supreme Court seeking 15 more days to conclude its inquiry in the Adani-Hindenburg case. The regulator has said it has “substantially progressed” in its investigations.
https://www.businessinsider.in/business/corporates/news/sebi-report-on-adani-group-market-regulator-seeks-15-more-days-from-sc/articleshow/102717140.cms This is the second extension that the markets regulator has sought from the apex court. Sebi is awaiting information it has sought from foreign entities, regulators and agencies.
The Supreme Court appointed 6-member panel has found no wrongdoing by the Adani Group..... The three key areas the SC appointed committee was looking into were: 1) Violation of Minimum Public Shareholding norms, 2) Disclosure of transactions with related parties in accordance with the law and 3) Stock price manipulation. The report says that prima facie there is no violation of existing laws or market regulations. .. A violation of MPS norms would have been proven if the ultimate beneficiary of these 13 foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) could be in any way traced back to the promoters of Adani Group..

ED Seizes New Delhi flat linked to NewsClick editor Prabir Purkayastha https://www.thestatesman.com/india/ed-seizes-new-delhi-flat-linked-to-newsclick-editor-prabir-purkayastha-1503209846.html August 9, 2023 Back in September 2021, the federal agency conducted a raid at Purkayastha’s premises. The ED’s search operation extended to the offices of Newsclick Studio and its affiliated entities, along with their Directors and shareholders (totaling ten entities) located in Delhi NCR. This action was taken under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). ...The recent move comes as part of the ED’s ongoing money laundering investigation into the news portal. The agency is preparing to file a charge sheet in relation to this matter. ..During the course of the investigation, it emerged that Prabir Purkayastha, who holds the position of Director at Newsclick, had known Neville Roy Singham from Worldwide Media Holdings LLC since 2017. When questioned, Prabir allegedly claimed to have no knowledge of Navielle’s company.
The ED’s inquiry also revealed a lack of clarity surrounding the receipt of Rs. 28.46 crore from foreign sources by NewsClick editor Prabir Purkayastha and Newsclick Studio employees. In response, Newsclick has refuted the allegations.
The ED previously attached Purkayastha’s fixed deposits amounting to ₹41 lakh. The agency has also pointed out that the company paid a salary of ₹17.08 lakh to incarcerated activist Gautam Navlakha, along with additional remittances made to certain journalists.
Amchi Mumbai Amchi BEST has the following demands
1. BMC must run BEST as part of the BMC Budget
2. Restore a fully BEST-owned fleet
3. Resume all discontinued routes.
4. Double the fleet to 6,000 buses for today’s Mumbai.
5. Give BEST buses priority lanes on arterial [or: main] roads
6. Stop privatization of BEST depots
We are demanding that the BEST revert to a publicly owned and operated fleet.
- JD on WA: I agree with all the demands.. But then at least someone should expose the fact that there is a way of wet leasing, while still maintaining standards and working conditions. Chahal is getting away by saying that they cannot dictate terms of hire and quality and working conditions of drivers..
- Hussein in WA The main argument for wet-leasing, if at all, is that the operations will cost less than a publicly operated fleet. The BMC initially introduced wet-leasing as a way of cutting down BEST's 'losses'. If such cost-savings can be done, wet-leasing might perhaps be a good thing. The problem is that the costs are reduced by (a) paying workers less and making them work more as compared to the regular BEST staff, and (b) cutting corners on maintainence and service quality. The first hurts the workers, the second hurts commuters.
So far there is no evidence that wet-leasing is cheaper to operate (with equal pay and equivalent or better services) than the BEST's own operations. In fact, the BEST and BMC have stopped talking about 'losses' entirely. So far, there is no proof that wet-leasing can work better.
In any case, even the 'reducing losses' argument is hollow at best. The BMC will spend 16,000 crore on the South Coastal Road, and is now planning to spend another 16,000 crore on the North Coastal Road. That is 32,000 crores for car-owners. The BEST's deficit is at 4,000 crores approximately. The BMC can simply write off this deficit, and make BEST operations a part of its yearly municipal budget.
For the Government and the BMC, wet-leasing policy is an ideological choice, not a practical one.
- Agreed.. but we also need to convince the average mumbaikar.. that the privatisation model compromises safety as well as quality of service.. and that wetleasing is not economic magic!!
- An alternative system could be what George Fernandes did to the Bombay Taxi Union. Organised the direct financing of Taxi's to the driver-owner. BEST could wet lease from individual drivers or two driver coops. who buy buses using bank loans and Union arrangements with Bus manufacturers. The Unions could also run mechanic/maintenance cooperative workshops through out the city.
