The Indian Federation of App-based Transport Workers (IFAT), a five-year-old entity with over 25,000 members working for aggregators like Uber, Amazon, and Zomato, helped Karnataka introduce a Bill for the welfare of gig workers in July after Rajasthan introduced a similar one in 2023. The Social Security Bill is a significant move for the union and its members and is a turning point in how India perceives labour unions. https://the-ken.com/story/algorithm-vs-unions-how-a-cab-driver-is-taking-the-fight-to-aggregators/

Once enacted, Karnataka will follow Rajasthan in becoming the second Indian State implementing regulations tailored to the welfare of these workers. While aggregators would be bound by onerous compliance requirements and additional cost obligations, other procedural aspects may also be demanding – for instance, dispute resolution mechanism under the Draft Bill, and the interplay between these provisions and those under the IDA.

Heatwave Action Coalition (HAC) calls for Urgent Action Against Inhuman Treatment of Amazon India Warehouse Workers amid Extreme Heat, stand in support with Amazon India Workers‘ Association (AIWA) https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSetXAprcZEsmR0DvXfjpKejccSxNTl-0FOTPjlf_SMkteNqRA/viewform numerous workers at the Amazon India warehouse have been forced to work without access to essential necessities such as water, food, and bathroom breaks.
Mr. Dharmendra Kumar, convenor of the Amazon India Workers Association, states, "Workers are facing extremely high temperatures in the warehouses, reaching up to 34.2°C in some areas. These severe conditions have compelled workers to unionize to voice their demands. With the heat continuing to escalate and no relief in sight, the health problems among AIWA members are worsening. However, there has been no response or action from either Amazon or the labour ministry."
Sarita Fernandes, Co-convenor of Heatwave Action Coalition states, “Heatwaves are the new norm, heat is not– in northern India. The incident was avoidable if Amazon India had put its people over profits in India. Amazon India needs to respond to its workers' demands and provide accountability of their actions to the workforce and policy officials of India.”
