.. I looked at the Committee to Protect Journalists database, the number of journalists killed in connection with their work in India. In the decade this government has been in power, 19 have been killed. And in the previous decade, before this government came in, it was 10, which was bad enough. ..
And even worse, India figures in the Global Impunity Index. Journalists are killed in connection with their work — targeted and murdered. Those who cover corruption, crime, politics, human rights. And there is impunity for the killers. The killers are not arrested in several cases, or when they are arrested, they are let out on bail and the case is not resolved. So we have been a founding and permanent member of this club of shame.
...: I don’t think it’s irreversible. It’s deep damage, no question about it, because it’s also in educational institutions and the judiciary. There are judges who make no secret of their affiliation with the BJP or indeed the RSS [a right-wing paramilitary group of Hindu nationalists]. So it’s deep damage. But irreversible? No. I think things change quickly. Realities on the ground quickly change. So all this gives me hope.

Many of these short films contain speeches that Modi delivered after the carnage, including during his Gaurav Yatra and campaigning for the state election several months after the 2002 anti-Muslim pogrom. Many of these speeches are no longer available online, Sharma said.

Sharma will also release six more clips this week and six the next week, containing more speeches as well as portions of his new film on Gujarat in the decade after the carnage. रायट्स नहीं होते राज धर्म उस समय निभाया

दंगे में मोदी की भूमिका है उन्होंने ही
गुजरात के बड़े-बड़े ऑफिसर्स को अपने आवाज
पर देर रात को बुलाया था और कहा था कि लेट

India has an estimated 760 million ‘active’ internet users^[2], accessing the internet more than once a month. 400 million of those are active on WhatsApp – the messaging platform’s largest user base.^[3] Several million others use alternative platforms like Facebook Messenger, Telegram and Signal. According to a study by the Reuters Institute, WhatsApp is the second largest, and Telegram is the fifth largest online platform for Indians to access news.^[4] Flying under the radar of election authorities, media regulators and policymakers, these messaging platforms have now become a core feature of electoral communications and media in India.

Given its reach and popularity of use, it’s no surprise that political parties, candidates, campaign management firms and the plethora of other actors involved in understanding and winning over the Indian electorate have adapted their strategies to utilise WhatsApp’s potential for elections. Unsurprisingly, this has led to several familiar concerns around electoral media now being reflected in the use of messaging platforms – disinformation and hate speech are rampant, while the grey-market of personal information fuels targeted propaganda.
